Worthing Offender Jailed After 46 Offences

A 41-year-old man has been jailed after repeatedly breaching a ban on entering parts of Worthing town centre.

Matthew Greenaway admitted 46 offences committed between April and August, including shop thefts, assaults, possessing a knife in public and exposing himself.

Ten of the offences involved assaults on police officers, while two ambulance workers were also assaulted.

Greenaway, of Clifton Road, Worthing, was given a Community Protection Notice in January preventing him from entering a designated area of the town centre while intoxicated.

He repeatedly breached the order.

Among the incidents, paramedics responding after Greenaway was found unconscious on 2 August were threatened when he woke up with a clenched fist.

He also assaulted officers on several occasions, including attempting to kick one in the throat, trying to headbutt and bite police, and spitting at officers.

Greenaway was sentenced to one year in prison at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 16 September.

His offences also included two counts of being drunk and disorderly and seven breaches of the Community Protection Notice.

Police say the sentence will provide relief to residents, businesses, visitors and emergency workers affected by his behaviour.
