Vapers across Sussex are being warned to expect higher costs later this year, as a new government tax on e-cigarettes comes into force.
From 1 October, a new Vaping Products Duty will add £2.20 to every 10ml of e-liquid – rising to £2.64 once VAT is included.
Nationally, more than 5 million people use vapes, with public health data suggesting usage is higher among lower-income groups and those trying to quit smoking.
Health experts say vaping has played a major role in reducing smoking rates, with charities like Action on Smoking and Health estimating millions of adults have quit cigarettes using e-cigarettes.
But the new tax is expected to significantly increase monthly costs. Estimates suggest light users could pay around £26 more per month, rising to nearly £80 for heavier users.
Industry figures warn the biggest price rises will hit cheaper products, which are often used by people trying to quit smoking.
There are also concerns the changes could have unintended consequences, particularly in areas where smoking rates remain higher.
According to public health data, parts of Sussex – including coastal communities – have historically seen higher smoking prevalence than the national average, meaning the impact could be felt more strongly locally.
The government says the move is designed to balance public health priorities while still keeping vaping cheaper than smoking, and expects to raise hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue over the coming years.
