A domestic abuser from Crawley has been jailed for five years after assaulting a woman known to him.

Tiago Nunes, 28, of Westminster Road, subjected the victim to a violent attack, during which he refused to let her leave the property, struck her, smashed her phone and choked her.

The victim later reported the incident to police.

Lewes Crown Court heard the offences placed Nunes in breach of a suspended sentence previously imposed for grievous bodily harm without intent.

The court was told that on 15 March 2024, Nunes – believed to be under the influence of drugs – became aggressive, damaging property before assaulting the victim inside the home.

He admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a weapon in public.

Nunes has a history of violent offending, including a random attack outside a Crawley nightclub in 2022 which left a man unconscious with a brain injury, and a separate incident last year where he was seen chasing another man while carrying a metal bar.

Following sentencing, investigating officer PC Bryony Tarrant said the victim had shown courage in coming forward and that tackling violence against women and girls remains a priority for Sussex Police.

She added that Nunes’ behaviour had been “appalling” and that officers were determined to secure justice.

He is now serving a significant custodial sentence.
