The iconic De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill is set to undergo a major transformation, with councillors due to vote next week on ambitious plans to restore and future-proof the Grade I listed landmark.

On Thursday, October 9, Rother District Council’s planning committee will consider two applications seeking permission for a phased programme of repairs and refurbishments designed to preserve the venue’s architectural character while boosting its accessibility and long-term sustainability.

The proposals include a comprehensive refurbishment of the auditorium, new accessibility and landscaping features at the main entrance, and the replacement of non-original windows and doors.

Plans also outline the installation of solar panels on the roof, a series of internal improvements, and the demolition of a small single-storey extension to make way for a new structure.

According to the council’s planning officers, the project forms part of a major capital investment backed by government and other funding to conserve the pavilion and secure its future.

They described conservation as being “at the heart of the proposals”.

While acknowledging that some elements — such as alterations to the entrance — could cause “less than substantial” heritage harm, officers said these would be “comprehensively outweighed” by the benefits. As such, both applications are recommended for approval subject to conditions.

The scheme has also won conditional support from Historic England, which said the plans could “restore the building to its former glory” if carried out to a high standard.

The Twentieth Century Society has called the proposals “sensitive and sorely needed”, though it urged further exploration of whether the auditorium’s fixed balcony seating could be retained.

No objections have been raised by residents or conservation groups.

If approved, the works will mark one of the most significant overhauls of the De La Warr Pavilion in its modern history, ensuring it continues to serve as both a cultural hub and an architectural treasure for future generations.

For full details of the applications, see references RR/25/1200/P and RR/2025/1193/L on the Rother District Council website.

Sometimes you’ll spot ramps that let you launch high into the sky, adding moments of surprise and exhilaration. Landing perfectly after a big jump feels immensely satisfying, especially when you manage to keep your sled steady for another streak of near misses.

I clearly feel that this place is not only an artwork Among Us Online but also the “soul” of Bexhill. The restoration, if done delicately, will help the building to retain its original value while still having a modern breath.
