Residents, community groups, schools, farmers and parish councils are being invited to apply for free trees to help green up the Chichester District this winter.

As part of its Tree Chichester District scheme, Chichester District Council has secured funding from the Tree Council and Defra’s Trees Outside Woodland Fund to support new planting projects across the area.

The scheme is open to anyone with land suitable for planting — whether that’s a community orchard, hedgerow, small copse, or even a “mini urban forest.” Applicants just need to own the land or have the landowner’s permission, and projects must deliver a community or public benefit, such as being in a visible or accessible location.

The council will cover the cost of the trees, as well as essential items like tree guards, mulch and protective fencing.

Councillor Jonathan Brown, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

“Tree planting not only enhances our landscapes — it supports wildlife, boosts wellbeing, and brings people together.
"We’d love to hear from anyone interested in planting more trees in their community.”

Applications are open until 17 November 2025, and trees will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Successful applicants must complete their planting by 16 February 2026.

To apply or find out more, email treescheme@chichester.gov.uk or visit www.chichester.gov.uk/treescheme.

The Tree Chichester District project has already seen 65,000 trees planted at more than 210 sites over the past four years, creating new community orchards, mini forests and green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
