Lewes Youth Sexual Health Clinic Saved After Public Opposition

A drop-in sexual health service for young people in East Sussex that was set to close has been saved following strong opposition during a public consultation.

The Circle Room in Lewes provides free and confidential sexual health support for under-25s, including advice, contraception, pregnancy testing and testing for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

East Sussex County Council had proposed closing the service in March as part of plans to save £45,000, suggesting young people could access alternative services elsewhere.

However, feedback from young people highlighted the importance of keeping the clinic open.

A new contract will now begin in March 2026, which will not only secure the future of the clinic but also expand the range of health services available to under-25s.

Foundry Healthcare Lewes, which hosts the Circle Room, says the service supports more than 50 young people every month.

Around 120 young people responded to the council’s consultation, with 85 per cent saying they were current or previous users of the service.

Many described the clinic as “vital”, praising it as a trusted, confidential and safe space offering specialist services all in one place.

Over the past year, the clinic supported 255 people under the age of 16, many of whom are unable to access alternative sexual health services online.

An equality impact assessment found closing the clinic would be likely to have a negative impact on young people living in areas of higher deprivation, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancies due to unmet contraceptive needs.

Councillors also pointed to public health data showing that for every £1 spent on preventing unintended pregnancies, around £9 can be saved in future health service costs.

The council has confirmed it will continue funding the clinic and expand support for under-25s, including help to stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and encourage physical activity.
