Neighbours have raised concerns about potential noise disturbance after a Brighton beer café applied to extend its opening hours.

The Lost and Found Beer Café, on Ditchling Road at Fiveways, has asked Brighton and Hove City Council for permission to sell alcohol until 11pm from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays.

The café currently closes at 9pm on weekdays and 10pm on Saturdays.

Some residents fear the venue could become more like a pub.

They told a council licensing panel that noise has been an issue on at least one occasion, when tables and chairs outside were used later than the café’s pavement licence allowed.

Neighbour Les Pond submitted video evidence of an event earlier in August, saying:

“Noise carries across Ditchling Road and into our street, particularly late at night when traffic dies down.
"On hot summer nights, when windows are open, it makes sleep very difficult.”

Another neighbour, Barbara Hawes, added that gatherings outside the café after closing time had caused further disruption.

Owner Jon Rutter, 55, said he was surprised by the complaints, as no concerns had previously been raised directly with him.

He stressed that the café is not seeking to become a bar, but wants longer hours to help the business remain sustainable during a period of rising costs.

Mr Rutter said:

“We’re known for our safe, friendly atmosphere and our support for local breweries, charities and community initiatives.
"We were surprised to hear of noise concerns, and would encourage neighbours to speak with us directly if issues arise.”

The application has not drawn objections from Sussex Police, the council’s licensing team, or environmental health officers.

A council licensing panel, made up of three Labour councillors, met on Monday (1 September) to consider the request.

A decision is expected within five working days.
