Permanent repair works to Worthing Pier are expected to cost nearly ÂŁ400,000 less than initially estimated, according to Worthing Borough Council.

The council says the project will now cost around ÂŁ550,000, down from a previous estimate of ÂŁ930,000, with work due to begin in August.

The pier was damaged during a storm in October 2024, forcing it to close temporarily before reopening two months later with a steel support structure installed.

The upcoming works will install new foundations beneath the Grade II listed structure, removing the need for the temporary steel support once completed.

Officials say the project will not require the pier to close, with completion expected before winter.

Routine maintenance will also be carried out on the underside of the structure during the works.

The council says the reduced cost is largely due to the project no longer requiring the removal and replacement of the pier’s timber deck, allowing all work to be carried out beneath the structure.

Worthing Borough Council leader Caroline Baxter said:

"Our pier is one of Worthing's best-loved landmarks and a huge part of our coastal heritage.
"Looking after it isn't just about maintaining a structure - it's about protecting a place that means so much to local people."

The pier, originally built in 1862 with later Art Deco additions, remains a key attraction for the town.

The council has also confirmed that the pier’s outer landing stage has reopened following maintenance work on the platform and handrails.
