A petition calling for safety improvements on Lewes Road in Newhaven is set to be considered by East Sussex County Council, following a collision in June in which a young girl was injured.

More than 770 people have signed the petition, which urges the council to install a zebra crossing and introduce a 20mph speed limit along the busy stretch of road.

The proposals will be reviewed by Claire Dowling, the council’s lead member for transport and environment.

Council officers have confirmed the site is being assessed for potential inclusion in the authority’s local transport improvement programme.

The petition states:

“Lewes Road connects the town centre to many residential areas with a high proportion of families.
"It is near a school, playground, community centre and nature area.
"It is also known for speedy and dangerous driving and a hill that reduces driver visibility.
"The county council must take immediate action to make it more safe.”

The campaign has the backing of Lewes MP and county councillor James McCleary, who represents the area.

He said:

“Slower speeds and a proper crossing will make a real difference for families, older residents and anyone walking or cycling in Newhaven.
"Improving safety on Lewes Road and the A259 has been one of my key priorities, and this shows what we can achieve when our community speaks with one voice.”

If the petition meets the necessary criteria, the proposals could move forward to a detailed appraisal. The council is expected to publish the results of its assessment in November.
