South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) has launched a new digital alert system designed to improve road safety by notifying drivers when an ambulance is nearby.

Developed with technology partners Acetech and Haas Alert, the system sends automatic alerts to smartphones, sat-navs, and in-car systems, including apps like Waze and Apple Maps. The notifications can appear before motorists see or hear an emergency vehicle, giving them extra time to respond and clear the way.

Following a successful trial last year, the system has now been installed across SECAmb’s fleet covering Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and North Hampshire. It also alerts drivers when ambulances are stationary at an incident, helping them plan alternative routes.

Driving Standards Manager Huw Watts said the rollout reflects the Trust’s commitment to innovation, helping crews reach patients faster while keeping staff, patients, and communities safe.

The service requires no sign-up or downloads.
