Four people were rescued after their outrigger canoe began sinking around a quarter of a mile off the entrance to Shoreham Harbour.
Volunteer watchkeepers at National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) in Shoreham spotted the vessel in difficulty shortly before 11.30am on Friday 16 January and alerted HM Coastguard.
The D-class lifeboat from RNLI Shoreham launched and found the four experienced paddlers struggling to bail out water in challenging sea conditions.
The crew towed the canoe to safety, allowing it to be emptied before escorting the group back into the harbour.
All four were wearing lifejackets and were uninjured.
The RNLI is reminding anyone who sees someone in trouble at sea to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
