Drivers are facing long delays on the A27 between Falmer and Lewes due to roadworks linked to a new development at a service station.
Queues yesterday (Wednesday) were building near the Esso Rontec Service Station, where work is taking place to lengthen slip roads as part of plans to build a new Greggs outlet.
Motorists say journeys that would normally take just a few minutes are being significantly delayed, with some reporting waits of up to an hour or more during peak times.
One driver described the situation as an “absolute nightmare”, saying his journey took an extra 40 minutes.
Others have raised concerns about the wider impact, including disruption to school journeys, with reports of pupils arriving late after being caught in traffic.
Contractors carrying out the roadworks have apologised for the disruption, explaining that lane closures and a temporary 50mph speed limit are needed to keep both workers and road users safe.
The works, which also include improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes, are expected to continue until May 15.
National Highways said the project is being carried out by a third party, but stressed that safety remains the top priority.
Drivers are being advised to plan ahead, check their routes and allow extra time for journeys while the work is ongoing.
