Councillors in Newhaven have voiced concerns despite a key transport scheme being unanimously approved by East Sussex County Council.
At a meeting on 18 March, plans linked to the town’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) were given the go-ahead, including Traffic Regulation Orders aimed at improving bus journeys through Newhaven.
The scheme is designed to make public transport quicker and more reliable, but some local Liberal Democrat councillors say serious questions remain – particularly around congestion and value for money.
Councillor Lesley Boniface welcomed efforts to improve bus services but warned that underlying traffic issues in the town have not yet been properly addressed.
She pointed to ongoing congestion between Denton Corner and the bridge as a major concern, arguing that without tackling these bottlenecks first, the wider project risks falling short of expectations.
Questions have also been raised about whether the redesigned bus interchange will deliver meaningful journey time savings.
While operators suggest buses will avoid queues more effectively, there is scepticism about how this will work in practice once vehicles rejoin general traffic.
Fellow councillor Jo Pettitt, who represents Denton ward, was more critical – highlighting the day-to-day reality for residents dealing with heavy traffic and deteriorating road conditions.
She argued that pushing ahead with a costly bus scheme before resolving congestion issues risks making an already difficult situation worse for drivers and the wider community.
Despite the concerns, the approved plans mark a significant step forward for the BSIP in Newhaven, with supporters hoping it will encourage more people to use public transport and ease pressure on local roads in the long term.

Waste of money, fixing potholes would be more beneficial.
