West Sussex County Council has completed improvements to a key walking and cycling route between Bognor Regis and the South Downs National Park.

The project includes upgrades to the twitten between Drygrounds Lane and Wroxham Way and a puffin crossing on Felpham Way at Steepers Close, making it safer and easier for students at Felpham Community College and Downview Primary School to walk and cycle.

The previously narrow path has been widened, resurfaced, and fitted with a drop kerb, new lighting, and improved drainage – making it accessible for pushchairs, mobility aids, and cyclists.

Vegetation was cleared to improve visibility and safety at all times of day.

The £880,000 scheme was funded through the Department for Transport’s Active Travel England fund.

Landbuild, the contractor, also donated a secure bike rack to Downview Primary School.

Councillor Joy Dennis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

“This new shared path provides a safe route for students and fills a gap in the active travel corridor between Bognor town centre and the potential housing development to the northeast.
"We hope it encourages more people to walk and cycle, helping reduce congestion and improve health while connecting the coast to the South Downs.”
