Two paddleboarders have praised Brighton RNLI after being rescued when tidal currents swept them out to sea.

The volunteer lifeboat crew launched on June 22 after the pair found themselves drifting further offshore during a paddleboarding trip.

One of the men, Jake Patten, used a mobile phone stored in a waterproof bag to call for help before the RNLI reached them around 20 minutes later and brought them safely back to shore.

Brighton RNLI is using the incident to remind people to check weather and tide conditions before heading out, wear a suitable flotation device, carry a means of calling for help and tell someone where they are going.

The charity also advises anyone who gets into difficulty to stay with their board if it is safe to do so and dial 999, asking for the Coastguard.
