A campaign group in Bexhill is urging council planners to scale back proposals for more than 200 new homes on the edge of the town.

Developer Charles Church has submitted a reserved matters application to build 210 properties on land west of Fryatts Way, but residents say the scheme will put huge pressure on local infrastructure and damage the character of the area.

In response, locals have formed the Wake-up Bexhill campaign group.

They argue the development would add hundreds of cars to local roads, worsen congestion, and increase demand on already overstretched schools and GP surgeries.

Campaigner Keri Radford said:

“There is no public transport near the site … the pollution and noise of four years of construction will be extremely detrimental to a mainly retired population in this corner of Bexhill.”
Developer Charles Church has defended the scheme, saying the layout and landscaping would “integrate with the existing context” and provide a “high-quality, sustainable and appropriate solution.”

Outline planning permission for the site was granted on appeal in January 2023 after government inspectors ruled that the need for new housing outweighed concerns about location and design.

Even so, campaigners hope they can still influence the details, pressing for fewer homes, safer access, and stronger commitments on traffic management, infrastructure and wildlife protection.

The application is expected to go before Rother District Council’s planning committee in the near future.

Full details can be found under reference RR/2024/2171/P on the council’s website.
