A rescue dog is celebrating a special Mother’s Day in her new home after giving birth to a surprise litter while in the care of Dogs Trust.

Seven-year-old Border Collie cross Bella arrived at Dogs Trust Shoreham after a change in her owner’s circumstances meant she could no longer be cared for.

Bella quickly won over staff and volunteers, spending much of her time in a foster home as she waited to be rehomed.

However, towards the end of last year, her carers noticed a change in her behaviour.

A visit to the vets revealed Bella was expecting puppies.

On New Year’s Day, she gave birth to seven healthy pups – named Ano, Asher, Bubbles, Fizz, Novo, Pop and Sylvester – in a nod to their New Year arrival.

She went on to be a devoted mum, caring for her litter as they grew stronger and more confident.

Once they were old enough, each of the puppies was successfully matched with a new family, and all seven have now found loving homes.

Bella has also had her own happy ending. On 18 February, she was adopted by a couple who quickly fell in love with her, and she is now settling into life in her forever home.

Kirsty Hayward, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Shoreham, said Bella had been “a sweet and friendly girl” who was adored by everyone at the centre.

She added:

“She did an amazing job raising her puppies, and it’s been so lovely to see each of them go off to their own homes.
"We’re absolutely delighted that Bella has now found a wonderful family of her own too – it’s the perfect happy ending for such a special dog this Mother’s Day.”

Dogs Trust Shoreham is open to the public five days a week, with no appointment needed to visit, meet dogs looking for homes, seek advice or apply to adopt.

The charity says finding the right match can take time, sometimes several months, with applications remaining valid for three months while staff work to pair each dog with a suitable home.
