Emergency services were called to West Wittering Beach on 10th July after a teenager became buried up to their neck in sand.
The Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team was paged at 4.47pm after the teenager reportedly dug a deep hole, estimated to be 6–7 feet, before being buried by friends. Lifeguards and beach staff were first on the scene and quickly alerted the coastguard.
The teen was safely freed, given oxygen, and taken to the first aid room for assessment. An ambulance was called as a precaution. Emergency responders say the casualty was extremely lucky not to have been crushed or suffocated.
Following the incident, the coastguard issued a safety warning, advising beachgoers not to dig holes deeper than waist height and to always fill in holes before leaving.
Anyone in trouble at the coast should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
