An animal welfare charity in East Sussex is considering redundancies and the closure of part of its site due to mounting financial pressures.

Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, based in Ringmer, says it recorded a loss of more than £1 million last year as rising costs continue to outpace income.

The centre temporarily closed on 28 and 29 April while staff were informed of the proposals.

A consultation process is now underway, with roles potentially being changed, merged or cut.

Chief executive Stephanie Smith said increasing costs — including animal care, energy bills and staffing — have created “significant financial challenges”.

Despite growth in fundraising and charity shop income in recent years, she said the organisation could not keep up with wider pressures facing the sector.

As part of the review, the charity is also considering closing its aviaries, which are home to more than 90 birds including parrots, budgies and chickens.

If the plans go ahead, Raystede says it will gradually withdraw from caring for birds and work to rehome them with suitable specialist organisations.

The charity says discussions with other avian groups have already begun, with a focus on ensuring the welfare of all animals involved.
