A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the death of Newhaven teenager Joshua Ingram, who was fatally stabbed near Seaford train station earlier this week.
Emergency services, including British Transport Police, Sussex Police and paramedics, were called to the scene just after 5pm on Wednesday.
Despite their efforts, Joshua’s injuries were described as “catastrophic” and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The accused, who is also 16 and cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
He confirmed his age and address before being remanded into youth detention. He is also facing a charge of possessing a bladed article.
The case will move to Lewes Crown Court.
During the hearing, prosecutors outlined how CCTV allegedly shows Joshua being attacked while walking towards the station with a friend.
He was stabbed twice – once in the back and once in the side – in what was described as a sudden ambush.
Joshua’s family have paid tribute to him, calling him a “cheeky chappy” who was “loved by many” and saying he had been taken from them “far too soon”.
Superintendent Dominique Ioannou offered condolences on behalf of Sussex Police, adding that specially trained officers are supporting Joshua’s relatives and appealing for the community to respect their privacy.
The incident caused disruption to rail services between Seaford and Newhaven Harbour, with trains halted while officers investigated. Services resumed on Thursday afternoon.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
