Two men have been arrested after a crash involving a private ambulance and a Mercedes on the A23 near Pease Pottage.
The collision happened on the northbound carriageway at around 7.30am on Saturday.
A 24-year-old man from Broadbridge Heath was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, driving while unfit through drugs, driving without insurance and possession of an offensive weapon.
A 29-year-old man from Rudgwick was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road traffic collision and drug driving.
Both have since been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Sussex Police said the private ambulance was not carrying a patient at the time of the collision.
Officers are also trying to trace the driver of a tipper truck carrying a crane attachment, which the ambulance was overtaking when the crash happened, as they may have witnessed the incident.
Anyone who saw the collision or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Sussex Police.
