Emergency pothole repairs have been completed in Brighton and Hove after poor road conditions led to disruption on several bus routes.

Over the weekend, Brighton & Hove Buses announced that the 5, 5A and 95 services would temporarily avoid certain stops in the Hangleton area due to deteriorating road surfaces.

The changes affected passengers travelling through the area, including pupils commuting to and from Cardinal Newman Catholic School.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the announcement came as a surprise to many local residents.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure at Brighton & Hove City Council, said it was “disappointing” that the council had not been formally notified before the service changes were introduced.

He said:

“There has been no formal notification to the council that these routes will be impacted by suspended stops.
“Any decision like this should be raised through official channels and the city’s Enhanced Bus Partnership.”

The council said a junction near Poplar Avenue and Lark Hill had been identified as the main concern, with contractors brought in to carry out urgent patch repairs.

Repair crews were seen working at the junction of Lark Hill and High Park Avenue on Monday afternoon, with the work completed later the same day.

A spokesperson for Brighton & Hove Buses confirmed all repairs had been finished by Monday evening.

Service performance manager Phil Cassinos said the condition of the roads in the area had been worsening “for some time”.
