A Worthing residential care home is set to close as West Sussex County Council moves forward with plans to reshape adult social care across the county.
The authority has confirmed that services at New Tyne Residential Care Home will come to an end following a detailed review into the long-term sustainability of the service.
The home currently supports 12 older residents living with dementia.
The decision, made by Councillor Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, follows months of consultation and scrutiny involving residents’ families, staff, UNISON, and members of the council’s Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee.
The review found that running New Tyne costs the council significantly more than commissioning equivalent care from other providers in the area.
It also confirmed that there are sufficient alternative care home places nearby to meet the needs of all current residents.
Cllr Jupp said:
“This was not a decision taken lightly. New Tyne is a well-regarded home with dedicated staff, and I’d like to thank everyone who shared their views.
"The wellbeing of residents has always been, and will remain, our highest priority.
“However, continuing to operate New Tyne is not financially viable in the long term.
"We must ensure we can deliver sustainable, high-quality care for all residents across West Sussex.”
The council says dedicated social care teams will now work closely with each resident and their families to identify suitable alternative accommodation that meets their individual needs.
Independent advocates will also be available to support anyone who requires extra help during the move.
Staff affected by the closure will be offered redeployment opportunities within the council where possible, and full support will be given throughout the consultation process.
Cllr Jupp added:
“Like many local authorities, we are facing serious financial pressures in adult social care.
"This difficult but necessary decision will help us continue providing sustainable services for the future.”
The decision remains subject to the council’s formal call-in period.
