Plans to revamp the historic Brighton Hippodrome have been approved, paving the way for work to progress at the long-closed venue.
Brighton & Hove City Council has given the go-ahead for a series of changes to the existing scheme, including increasing capacity from 1,800 to 2,300 and allowing for a higher roof and improved fire escape access.
Some previously proposed features – such as a rooftop restaurant, members’ club and rehearsal space – have been removed from the plans, with a greater focus now placed on the main auditorium.
Developers say the updated design will include a new acoustic roof aimed at reducing noise for nearby residents, alongside measures such as event marshals to manage crowds leaving the venue.
While there has been support for bringing the Grade II* listed building back into use, some local residents have raised concerns about potential noise, increased footfall and anti-social behaviour in surrounding streets.
The Hippodrome has been closed for nearly two decades and remains on the “at risk” register, but the latest decision marks a significant step towards its reopening.
