Volunteer crews from Brighton RNLI responded to three separate incidents over a busy 24-hour period, including two lifeboat launches to people reported in difficulty.

The first incident came late on Friday evening when crews were placed on standby to assist police with a shoreline search for a man believed to be near the water.

The individual was later located safely and the crew were stood down.

On Saturday afternoon, RNLI volunteers launched to help a vessel around two nautical miles west of Brighton Marina after it suffered engine failure and began drifting offshore.

The boat was located and safely towed back to the marina.

Later that evening, crews were called to reports of a kayaker struggling in offshore winds south of the Meeting Place Café. However, before the lifeboat reached the scene, the kayaker managed to return safely to shore.

Brighton Lifeboat Operations Manager Charlie Dannreuther said the incidents highlighted how quickly situations at sea can change, particularly in offshore conditions or when equipment fails.

He also urged anyone heading onto the water to check conditions, carry a reliable way of calling for help and make sure someone knows their plans.

Brighton RNLI’s volunteer crews remain on call around the clock throughout the year.
