A Brighton primary school facing possible closure now has fewer than 40 pupils on its roll, according to council papers.

Figures show just 37 children currently attend Middle Street Primary School, with 27 of them in Year 6 and due to move on to secondary education this year.

Brighton & Hove City Council will hold a special meeting on Thursday to consider proposals to close the school at the end of the 2025–26 academic year.

The council says the school has faced ongoing governance and financial difficulties, with an interim executive board concluding it no longer has a “viable future”. Reports also suggest the school has built up a deficit of around £400,000 over the past two years.

Despite the proposals, some respondents to a consultation argued the school remains an important part of the local community and said its closure was not inevitable.
