Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has taken over the investigation into an arson attack at Peacehaven Mosque.
The incident took place on October 4, when a fire was started outside the mosque on Phyllis Avenue.
Following initial enquiries by Sussex Police, new evidence has prompted CTPSE to assume leadership of the investigation as officers continue to work to determine the motive behind the offence.
Two men — 38-year-old Ricky Ryder from Seaford and 34-year-old Jack Slowey from Peacehaven — have already been charged with arson with intent to endanger life.
They were remanded in custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and are due to appear at the Central Criminal Court on November 14.
A third man, aged 69 and from Newhaven, was arrested on October 31 in connection with the case. He has been bailed until January 30, 2026, while enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Superintendent Claire Finlay, Head of CTPSE, said:
“I appreciate the concern an incident of this nature has caused locally.
"There has been a huge amount of work by the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team and significant reassurance work by officers within the community.
"We will continue to progress this investigation at pace.”
Superintendent Rachel Swinney from Sussex Police added:
“We recognise the impact this incident continues to have on the public.
"Our officers remain on hand to support the community and ensure any concerns are heard and acted upon.
"I’d like to thank the local people who have supported officers with this investigation.”
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward through the public portal to assist with the ongoing investigation.
