A man has been jailed for three years after subjecting a woman in Crawley to a prolonged pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour.
Lee Yates controlled multiple aspects of the woman’s life over several years, including what she wore, when she could bathe, and even when she was allowed to sleep.
He also demanded she cook his meals, hand over spare money, and subjected her to threats and violence when she challenged him, including threats to kill her pets.
The woman, who is in her 40s, reported the abuse to Sussex Police, prompting an investigation.
She was supported by specialist officers and safeguarded throughout the process.
Yates was arrested and later charged with coercive and controlling behaviour, along with two counts of rape.
At Lewes Crown Court in April, he was found guilty of coercive and controlling behaviour but acquitted of both rape charges. He was sentenced at the same court earlier this month.
He has now been jailed for three years.
Detective Investigator Hannah Lane said Yates used violence and intimidation in an attempt to dominate the victim’s life, but praised the woman for her courage in coming forward.
She added that victims of coercive or controlling behaviour are not alone and urged anyone affected to seek help and report it to police or support services.
