A domestic abuser who tried to suffocate a woman during a terrifying attack in Worthing has been jailed.
Enzo Giarratano assaulted the victim — a woman known to him — as she attempted to escape from a property following a dispute.
The 54-year-old prevented the woman from leaving and put his hands over her mouth and nose, leaving her in fear for her life.
The victim later said she was terrified during the assault and that the incident continues to have a long-lasting impact on her life.
At Lewes Crown Court on January 16, Giarratano appeared for sentencing after admitting two counts of intentional suffocation.
The court heard that the incident took place on January 18, 2023, at an address in Worthing.
The morning after an argument, Giarratano assaulted the victim as she cried out for help and tried to flee the property.
He dragged her back inside and continued the attack, only stopping when a neighbour came to the front door and challenged him. Police were then called.
Giarratano, of North End Road, West Kensington, was sentenced to two years in prison.
Speaking after the case, Investigator Jake Saunders praised the victim for coming forward.
He said:
“The victim showed great courage in reporting this traumatic incident to police.
"I would also like to thank the neighbour who supported her and called the police.
“This case continues to have a lasting impact on the victim, including fear of leaving home, nightmares and panic attacks.
“We take reports of domestic abuse extremely seriously and encourage anyone experiencing violence or abuse to contact Sussex Police.
"In this case, a dangerous offender has admitted his crimes and is now serving a significant custodial sentence.”
