Residents at a care home in East Grinstead are proving it is never too late to learn a new skill after taking part in weekly sign language classes.
The sessions at HC-One’s Charters Court Care Home are led by Care Assistant Laura Patterson and focus on learning Makaton — a form of communication that uses signs, symbols and speech.
Laura, who learned Makaton as a child due to her own hearing difficulties, said she is delighted to share her skills with residents.

The classes have quickly become a popular weekly activity, with residents practising together and supporting one another as they learn.
Adding a family touch, Laura’s three-year-old daughter Grace also joins the sessions and is learning to sign alongside residents.
Senior Wellbeing Coordinator Mandy Hersey said the idea was introduced last October to give residents the chance to try something new while making use of Laura’s experience.
“It is wonderful to see how much our residents are enjoying the classes,” she said.
“By offering diverse activities, Charters Court aims to contribute to the quality of life and overall wellbeing of our residents.”
Resident Wendy Jones, 87, said she has embraced the challenge and even practised at home by watching online videos.
At Christmas, the group signed one of the carols during a concert at the home.
Charters Court says it remains committed to providing activities that promote learning, inclusion and social connection for residents.
