A film directed by a former Brighton College student has received eight nominations at this year’s Academy Awards.
Director Chloé Zhao, who studied at the East Sussex school between 1998 and 2000, is behind the film Hamnet, which has been recognised across several major categories.
The film is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel and offers an imagined portrayal of the lives of William Shakespeare and his wife Anne in the aftermath of their son’s death.
Hamnet has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Casting.
Chloé Zhao is no stranger to awards success, having previously won Best Director at both the BAFTAs and the Oscars in 2021 for Nomadland.
Brighton College headmaster Steve Marshall-Taylor said the school was “delighted” by her latest achievements.
“We remember Chloé not only for her creativity and drive, but also for her happiness and kindness – qualities we value greatly at Brighton College,” he said.
“We wish her the very best of luck at the Oscars.”
The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on 15 March and will be hosted by US comedian Conan O’Brien.
Zhao, who was born in China, made history in 2021 by becoming the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes.
