Police and local leaders have condemned a suspected arson attack at a mosque in Peacehaven.

Detectives are investigating the fire, which broke out at the mosque in Phyllis Avenue around 9.45pm on Saturday (4 October).

A car was found alight, with the flames spreading to the building. No one was hurt, and evidence suggests the blaze was started deliberately.

Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Paul Court described the incident as “an appalling and reckless attack”, adding that patrols have been stepped up around Peacehaven and at places of worship across the county.

Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne called the fire “the height of hateful criminality”, urging anyone with information about two people detectives want to identify to come forward.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews from Preston Circus and Roedean extinguished the fire using foam and are working with police on a joint investigation.

Local leaders have also issued statements of support for the Muslim community.

East Sussex County Council Leader Keith Glazier said the crime was “horribly shocking”, while Lewes District Council Leader Zoe Nicholson said the incident “strikes at the heart of our community” and expressed solidarity with those affected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police.
