Work has begun on a major project to restore the Grade I listed De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, as the iconic arts venue marks its 90th anniversary.
The seafront landmark has hosted artists including Keane, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Dionne Warwick and Rag'n'Bone Man.
It also famously staged Bob Marley’s first UK performance in 1972.
The first phase of the restoration will focus on repairing the roof and the building’s distinctive staircase glazing.
Further upgrades will include new auditorium seating, repairs to a long-out-of-service piano lift, and improved storage beneath the stage.
Despite the work, all areas of the venue are set to remain open throughout 2026.
The project follows a £7.6 million National Lottery grant awarded last year, with backing from organisations including Rother District Council and support from comedian and actor Suzy Eddie Izzard.
Officials say the ageing building has suffered from issues including leaks, poor insulation and corroding windows, with the wider aim to future-proof the venue for generations to come.
A fundraising campaign is also underway, allowing supporters to have their name engraved on a seat as part of the restoration.
Alongside the works, the Pavilion will continue to host a full programme of events in 2026, including live music, exhibitions and the Big Summer Sounds festival featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
