A 48-year-old man from Bexhill has been convicted of the murder of 58-year-old Rita Lambourne, following a trial at Hove Crown Court.

Rita was fatally attacked at her home in Bayencourt South on the evening of 12 February at around 9.30pm. Paramedics attended the scene, but she was sadly confirmed dead.

Donald Excell, 48, of Seabourne Road, Bexhill, was arrested shortly after the incident on 14 February.

He was later charged with murder and possession of a weapon in a public place.

On Friday (19 December), a jury unanimously found him guilty on both counts. Excell is due to be sentenced at Hove Crown Court on 12 March.

During the trial, the court heard that Excell, a cousin of Rita’s, entered her home and attacked her with an axe, causing fatal injuries. CCTV footage helped police track his movements before and after the attack, leading to his identification and arrest.

Excell largely declined to answer questions during police interviews.

The murder weapon and related items were initially missing.

The investigation took a crucial turn on 20 September when teenage boys discovered a rucksack while fishing at a lake north of Bexhill.

The bag contained clothing, a leather axe sheath, and a sandbag used to weigh it down.

A subsequent search of the lake recovered the axe.

Financial records showed Excell had purchased an axe and sheath in 2019, which were delivered to his home.

Expert analysis confirmed the wounds on Rita were consistent with that axe.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell, Senior Investigating Officer, said:

"This has been an extremely distressing case for everyone involved, particularly Rita’s family and friends, as well as the wider community.
"Today’s verdict reflects the strength of the evidence gathered and the tireless work of our investigation teams.
"We hope this outcome provides some measure of closure for those who loved Rita.
"Our thoughts remain firmly with them."

Rita’s family paid tribute to her life, saying:

"Rita was more than a victim — she was a cherished presence whose kindness, laughter, and love continue to bind us together.
"While no verdict can undo the loss, the court’s decision affirms accountability and upholds justice.
"We ask that this moment be remembered not solely for the crime, but for the resilience of those left behind and for Rita’s life – a life that will always be honoured, remembered, and deeply missed."

Rita Lambourne is remembered as a mother, daughter, sister, nan, aunty, cousin, partner, and friend.
