A man has died and several others have been seriously injured following a crash involving a vehicle that had been subject to a police pursuit in East Sussex.

Police say a BMW collided with three other vehicles on the A21 in Robertsbridge at around 8:20pm on Saturday evening.

The driver of the BMW, a 23-year-old man from Hailsham, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.

Two passengers in another vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while several other people involved sustained minor injuries requiring hospital treatment.

The A21 between Battle and Hurst Green was closed in both directions and is expected to remain shut into today (Monday) while investigations continue.

A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the circumstances surrounding the pursuit.

Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme of Sussex Police said the force’s thoughts are with the family of the young man who died and all those affected, adding that a full investigation is underway and there will be increased police presence in the area.

The IOPC confirmed it is independently investigating the incident and will examine police actions prior to the fatal collision.
