A man has been found guilty of raping a woman in Dorset Gardens, Brighton, following a trial at Brighton Crown Court.

Alieu George, 45, of no fixed address, was convicted of rape and sexual assault by penetration after a jury returned guilty verdicts on Wednesday 17 December. He had denied the charges.

The court heard the attack took place at around 9.05am on Sunday 22 June, after the victim was separated from a group following a night out.

Members of the public became concerned when they saw the woman distressed in the park and called police.

Officers arrived to find the victim extremely upset, with George nearby.

He claimed the woman was his girlfriend, but she later told police he had led her to the park and sexually assaulted her.

George was arrested at the scene and charged later that day.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on 10 March 2026.

Detective Constable Daisy Alden praised the victim’s bravery and thanked the members of the public who called 999.

She said:

“Their quick action meant we were able to arrest the suspect within minutes.
"The victim showed incredible courage throughout this investigation.
“Alieu George presents a clear danger to women, and the streets of Brighton and Sussex are safer with him behind bars.”

Police are urging anyone who has experienced sexual violence to report it by calling 101, reporting online, or dialling 999 in an emergency.
