Sussex Police is set to receive £103,000 from Chichester District Council to install 12 new Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across the area.
The funding, approved by the council’s cabinet this week, will come from the Community Infrastructure Levy — money collected from developers to improve local infrastructure.
The cameras will be placed at key routes including West Wittering Road, Lavant Road, Old Broyle Road, Bognor Road, St Pancras/Westhampnett Road, Oving Road, North Mundham Road, Cathedral Way (two sites), Terminus Road, Stockbridge Road, and Whyke Road.
Councillor Bill Brisbane, cabinet member for planning, said the locations currently represent “blind spots” in the existing police network, adding that the new cameras will help deter and detect criminal activity.
The installations are expected to be completed by the end of the financial year.
Some councillors also asked whether similar technology could be introduced in the northern parts of the district, within the South Downs National Park, and the matter will be raised with the Authority.
