Plans to redevelop the former police station site in Crowborough are set to be considered by Wealden District councillors later this week.

The council’s Minors Planning Committee will review an application on Thursday, January 15, submitted by Mercator Group, which proposes the creation of three new homes on the site to the north of Crowborough Hill.

The plans include converting the long-vacant former police station building into a four-bedroom house, with access via North Beeches Road.

Two additional homes are also proposed elsewhere on the site.

One would be a four-bedroom property built next to the existing police station building, involving the demolition of some more modern extensions.

The second would be a three-bedroom home constructed on the site of a former garage block at the rear.

Although planning officers are recommending the scheme for approval, the application has been called in for committee consideration by council leader James Partridge.

Councillor Partridge has raised concerns about the development’s potential impact on neighbouring properties, highway safety and the overall character of the area.

An officer’s report notes that the former police station is considered a Non-Designated Heritage Asset.

While the proposals would result in some heritage harm by altering the building’s setting, officers say this is balanced by the benefit of bringing the vacant building back into use.

Officers conclude that the benefits of the development outweigh the disadvantages and have recommended planning permission be granted.

The application can be viewed on the Wealden District Council website under reference WD/2025/1433/F.
