Seaford Museum in East Sussex has reopened its doors following a four-month closure for essential maintenance work.

The 200-year-old Martello Tower underwent checks, cleaning, and conservation of displays and artefacts, with work carried out by Seaford Town Council (STC) and the Seaford Museum and Heritage Society, which manages the site.

“Important maintenance works are not always apparent to visitors, but are nonetheless very necessary,” the museum said.

Built in 1803 as part of Britain’s defences against Napoleon Bonaparte, the tower later housed signallers, excise officers, and miners. In 1979, it became home to the Seaford Museum and Heritage Society, before undergoing refurbishment by Lewes District Council and eventually coming under STC ownership.

“Maintaining the two-hundred-year-old Martello Tower is unending and complex,” the museum added, welcoming visitors back to explore its history and collections.
