Shoplifting in Worthing has fallen by 8% over the past year, as Sussex Police continue targeting repeat offenders and improving how retail crime is reported.
A “One Touch Reporting” system introduced in Adur and Worthing has made it easier for shops to report thefts, leading to more incidents being recorded but giving police better intelligence to identify prolific offenders.
Through Operation Apprentice, officers have carried out targeted patrols, resulting in more arrests, court action and a sharp rise in solved shoplifting cases compared with 2022.
Several recent cases include:
Fardin Farji, 32, of no fixed address, admitted eight thefts from stores in Worthing and Shoreham, including repeated targeting of the Co-op in Goring Road.
He was jailed for six weeks and given a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from retail premises across West Sussex.
Daniel Mansfield, 41, of Ivy Arch Road in Worthing, was convicted of 14 thefts and eight breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order, mainly involving Morrisons stores in Newland Street and Broadwater Road.
He received a 12-week suspended sentence and rehabilitation requirements.
TJ Nelms, 24, also of no fixed address, admitted six shop thefts and breaches of a Community Protection Notice after targeting stores in Worthing and Littlehampton.
He was jailed for 16 weeks.
Police say the combination of improved reporting and proactive policing is helping bring repeat offenders before the courts and reduce harm to local businesses.
Officers continue to encourage retailers and the public to report all incidents of shoplifting, stressing that every report helps build intelligence and target enforcement.
