Beaches and coastal locations across Sussex are set to take part in nationwide sewage protests this weekend as campaigners call for stronger action on water pollution.
Surfers Against Sewage says thousands of people will join Paddle Out Protests on Saturday (16th May), with more than 50 locations involved across the UK.
Sussex events are planned at:
Hastings – Outside Source Park, 12pm
Rottingdean Beach – 12pm
Dell Quay, Chichester – 12pm
Littlehampton – The Beach Café, 2pm
Shoreham Beach, Shoreham-by-Sea – 4pm
Campaigners say the demonstrations follow the announcement of the proposed Clean Water Bill, arguing it does not go far enough to reform the water industry.
Surfers Against Sewage says water companies recorded more than 290,000 sewage spills in 2025, while recent polling suggests 53 per cent of people worry about becoming ill from poor water quality while swimming.
Chief Executive Giles Bristow said:
"Thousands of us are paddling out in protest."
Campaigners are urging people to support local events and calls for action over sewage pollution.
