Sussex has seen a recent increase in the display of flags, prompting concerns about the impact on local communities.

While motivations for displaying flags vary, some residents have reported feeling intimidated or targeted—not by the flags themselves, but by the perceived reasons behind their display.

Under the Highways Act, attaching any item, including flags, to lampposts or other street furniture is an offence.

Responsibility for removing such items lies with local councils or highways authorities, not the police.

Sussex Police say officers encountering people affixing flags will inform them of the relevant legislation and may issue warnings about potential enforcement action.

The force will continue to respond to incidents involving intimidation, threats toward those removing flags, or other criminal activity such as criminal damage.

Police emphasise that violent, threatening, or intimidatory behaviour will not be tolerated, with investigations and enforcement taking place where there is a legal basis.

They also state they aim to respond to public concerns fairly and work with councils and political leaders to support community cohesion.
