Sussex Police is urging residents to take extra steps to protect their homes as the festive season approaches, warning that burglaries often increase in the run-up to Christmas.

While officers recommend good home security practices all year round, they say additional precautions during the Christmas period can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Hutchings said homes can be particularly vulnerable at this time of year, as people prepare for celebrations or spend more time away from home.

“During this time of year homes can be more at risk of burglary,” she said.
“We encourage the public to be extra security conscious during their preparations for the Christmas period.”

As part of their advice, Sussex Police have shared a burglary prevention “battle plan”, inspired by the film Home Alone, offering practical tips to help keep properties secure in the lead-up to Christmas.

Residents are advised to ensure all doors and windows are properly secured, keep Christmas presents out of sight, and dispose of packaging carefully, as empty boxes can alert burglars to new and valuable items inside a home.

Police also warn against leaving keys, money or valuables near doors or windows, and advise against storing gifts in cars, sheds or garages.

Other recommendations include registering valuable items such as laptops and computers on secure websites like Immobilise, testing burglar alarms to ensure they are working correctly, and avoiding posting holiday locations on social media, which could indicate a home is empty.

Police also suggest making homes look occupied by using timer switches on lights or radios, or asking a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on the property and draw curtains if residents are away.

Joining a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme is also encouraged.

Detective Chief Inspector Hutchings said burglary can have a lasting impact on victims.

“We understand the traumatic impact burglary has on victims emotionally as well as the financial loss,” she said.
“Sussex Police carries out a significant amount of engagement work with communities to prevent crime and bring perpetrators to justice.”

She added that officers are committed to attending every residential burglary in person, to maximise opportunities to gather evidence and support victims.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour, with police reminding the public to always call 999 in an emergency.
