Tributes have been pouring in following the death of long-serving Hastings councillor Peter William Pragnell, who has passed away at the age of 65.

Cllr Pragnell, a former coach driver and civil servant with the Department for Work and Pensions, was a well-known figure in local politics.

Over the years, he served both as leader of Hastings Borough Council and as chairman of East Sussex County Council, as well as representing Ashdown and Conquest on the county council.

His death was announced earlier this week by Hastings and Rye Conservatives chairman Liam Atkins, who described him as “the kindest, most humble, and friendly chap to all who knew him” and “not just a councillor, but everyone’s friend and mentor.”

Cllr Atkins added:

“Peter fought tirelessly for the residents of Hastings and East Sussex.
"He was respected across the political divide and served our community with unwavering commitment.
"He will be sorely missed.”

East Sussex County Council leader Keith Glazier also paid tribute, calling him a “staunch supporter of his community” who worked tirelessly to get the best deal for local people.

Messages of condolence have come from across the political spectrum.

Green Party councillor Glenn Haffenden, leader of Hastings Borough Council, said:

“He will be remembered as a dedicated former leader and long-serving councillor in Hastings who cared deeply for the town and its residents.”

Labour councillor Godfrey Daniel described him as a “true gentleman and devoted public servant,” while Liberal Democrat leader Cllr David Tutt said he would be “sadly missed” after many years of committed service.

Cllr Pragnell was also a passionate supporter of Charlton Athletic, and will be remembered locally for his warmth, kindness and dedication to the community.
