Manufacturers across West Sussex are set for a major digital upgrade after the Government confirmed £3.1 million in new funding for the Made Smarter programme.

The initiative, which continues from April 2026, will support hundreds of small and medium-sized manufacturers with expert advice, leadership training, digital skills and match-funded grants.

The aim is to boost productivity, drive innovation, create skilled jobs and reduce carbon emissions.

Made Smarter South East is delivered by Surrey County Council in partnership with West Sussex County Council.

Since launching in April 2025, the programme has already supported more than 270 manufacturers, helping businesses develop digital roadmaps, access training and secure funding for new technology projects.

Companies have so far unlocked more than £1 million of investment in areas such as automation, robotics and 3D printing.

Programme Manager Bryan Vint said the latest funding is a “huge boost” for the region.

He said:

“We’ve already seen what can be achieved when businesses have access to the right tools and support.

"This next phase will help even more manufacturers grow, innovate and plan for the future.”

One Sussex company already benefiting is Hunt Bike Wheels, based in Partridge Green, which is using the programme to enhance product development.

The firm has taken part in leadership training and secured funding to expand its modelling and 3D printing capabilities — allowing faster and more cost-effective design of its products.

Made Smarter offers businesses an initial digital assessment followed by a tailored plan, as well as access to training, internships and grants of up to £20,000 towards new technology.

The programme is designed to help manufacturers modernise quickly and remain competitive in a changing industry.
