A Worthing man has been sentenced to three years in prison after a serious collision in Climping left a 60-year-old woman with life-changing injuries.
Adam Stepney, 28, of Gratwicke Road, Worthing, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Portsmouth Crown Court and was also disqualified from driving for four years.
He was sentenced on Friday, 20 March 2026.
The crash happened on the A259 Grevatts Lane around 5.30pm on 14 May 2024.
Witnesses reported that Stepney, travelling east, crossed the central white lines into the opposing carriageway, causing a series of collisions before a head-on crash with the victim’s car.
The woman was taken to hospital and continues to undergo treatment for her injuries.
Stepney also suffered serious injuries in the collision.
The court heard that Stepney has epilepsy and had failed to disclose recent seizures to the DVLA.
He suffered a seizure while driving, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
The judge described the case as “appalling,” noting that Stepney knowingly concealed his condition and chose to continue driving, putting others at serious risk.
Lead investigator Tudor Wells said:
"This was a wholly avoidable incident. Stepney made a conscious decision to drive despite knowing he was not medically fit.
"The consequences have been life-changing for an innocent member of the public.
"Anyone with a medical condition that may affect their driving must follow guidance and inform the DVLA.
"Failing to do so puts lives at risk and will be treated extremely seriously."
