People in Worthing may soon face fines of up to £1,000 for feeding wild animals in the town centre.
Worthing Borough Council says excessive feeding of pigeons, seagulls, and other wildlife has raised concerns about public health, damage to public spaces and local businesses, and pests such as mice and insects.
The council is proposing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that would allow officers to issue fixed penalty notices of £100, with higher fines of up to £1,000 possible through the courts.
Residents, businesses, and visitors are being invited to take part in a public consultation on the proposals, which runs until 25 March.
Some locals say wildlife has become aggressive in the town centre.
One resident reported being swooped by a seagull while eating on a bench, while another described pigeons gathering in large numbers at bus stops.
Others acknowledge the potential benefits of a ban but question whether fines are the right approach.
The council says the aim is to keep Worthing’s town centre clean and safe while protecting the long-term wellbeing of local wildlife, and encourages the public to share their views before any decision is made.
