A package of transport and road safety improvements worth almost £31 million has been agreed by East Sussex County Council.
The council approved its draft programme for the 2026/27 financial year earlier this week, setting out a range of schemes across the county.
Planned investment includes walking and cycling upgrades in Bexhill, town centre improvements in Hastings, a bus priority scheme along the A259 in Newhaven, and two separate bus projects in Eastbourne.
Funding for the programme will come from a mix of sources, including government grants and developer contributions linked to housing growth.
More than £10 million of the total is expected to be drawn from funds such as the Local Growth Fund, Levelling Up Fund and Town Deal funding.
Among the major schemes outlined are £1.07 million for active travel improvements in Bexhill, £1.276 million for junction upgrades at Station Approach and Havelock Road in Hastings, and £5.5 million for town centre works as part of the Hastings Green Connections project.
The council has also secured £17.3 million in bus grant funding, which will be used to introduce new bus lanes and real-time passenger information at stops.
A further £8.475 million is set to come from the Bus Service Improvement Plan, with around £4 million earmarked for the first phase of the A259 scheme in Newhaven, including a new bus interchange at Denton Corner.
The remaining funding is expected to support bus priority measures in Eastbourne, including £1.834 million for lanes around the town’s railway station and £2.77 million for improvements along Seaside and St Anthony’s Avenue.

Regarding the new funding for transport etc in East Sussex I didn't see an allocation for repairing all the potholes. Which is a major safety and financial issue for all drivers, especially when you are distracted from driving by trying to avoid the holes and saving suspensions and tyres.
