New ‘Pride In Worthing’ Scheme Launched To Improve Town Centre

A new initiative aimed at making Worthing town centre cleaner, greener and better maintained has been launched.

Worthing Borough Council says hundreds of thousands of pounds will be invested each year through its Pride in Worthing scheme, which will focus on tackling issues including litter, graffiti, vandalism and fly-tipping.

Council teams will work alongside local businesses and residents to improve public spaces and enhance the town centre throughout the year.

The scheme will be funded through a combination of sources, including £875,000 from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which will be allocated between September this year and 2029.

A further £310,000 will also be redirected from the town’s Lido regeneration project, as the money is not currently needed for that scheme until 2028.

However, Worthing Borough Council says the Lido remains a priority, with £1.29 million set aside for the project in the current year while further funding is sought.

Council leader Carline Baxter said she had been "inspired by the drive and passion of our community to see our town thrive".

She said:

"I want Worthing to be a town where people feel proud to live, where businesses have the confidence to invest and where public spaces are welcoming and accessible."

The scheme could see additional bins, seating and lighting introduced in busier areas.

West Sussex County Council has also agreed to increase graffiti removal and weeding on land it manages.

Councillor Baxter added that she wanted Worthing town centre to be a place where "young people can see opportunities for their future", and where visitors leave with "an even more positive impression" than before.
