Flood alerts remain in force across parts of Sussex as heavy rain continues to affect the south east of England.

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts for several rivers, including the Cuckmere in Hellingly and Alfriston, with residents advised to take extra care and avoid roads known to flood.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain is in place from 9am until 10pm on Thursday.

Officials say flooding of homes, businesses and roads is possible, along with disruption to bus and train services across East and West Sussex and neighbouring counties.

The Met Office has also warned that the rain will be accompanied by strengthening winds later in the day, with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour possible along exposed parts of the Sussex coast.

Other rivers under flood alert in the wider region include the River Medway, River Stour, Rivers Eden and Eden Brook.

The Environment Agency has urged people not to put themselves or others at risk, advising residents to stay away from floodwater and follow local advice.

Meanwhile, homelessness charity Sussex Emmaus has called on the public to help protect people sleeping rough during the severe weather.

The charity is asking anyone concerned about someone sleeping outside, including in doorways or tents, to report it via the Streetlink website so local support services can respond.

Karen Chapman, Chief Executive of Sussex Emmaus, said winter weather brings added urgency and urged the Sussex community to act with care and compassion.

Residents are being encouraged to stay up to date with weather and flood warnings and to plan travel carefully while conditions remain unsettled.
